Spotlight on JCC Fine Art Student

Happy Thursday!

The Frank Creech Art Gallery would like to introduce you to Sam Walter. Sam is currently a JCC Middle College student and JCC Fine Art student who has started working towards his senior project. The great news is that Sam has focused his attention on raising funds for the JCC Fine Art department and the Frank Creech Art Gallery. Sam came to us with this idea and sincerity to give back. Sam’s idea is to have a weekly raffle for artwork that he has gathered from students and local talent. These tickets are $1.00 a piece and the drawing will be each Friday from January until late April. Sam is using social media and word of mouth to get the message out to the community! We are very humbled by his commitment and willingness to make a difference!

Our current raffle artwork is a silkscreened poster by Dantanamo Designs. Paul is a past JCC student who is currently printing handmade work for the music industry.

Past JCC Graphic Design Student Still Learning

On Feburary 19 & 20, 2011, Fine Art and Graphic Design Instructor William Gregory, traveled to Winston Salem with a past GRD student to learn about the new screenprinting equipment the art department has acquired. This was a two day workshop that was both instructional and fun! By purchasing this equipment, the department has added a new skill set that students can use to find employment or start their own business. This workshop showed us just how to do that!

“Papier Colle’ (Collages) Artist’s Statement”
As a 20th century technique, collage is considered one of the major innovations of Modern art. Collage is an artist inserting pieces of the real world into a constructed one.

McRay adopts impromptu invention in the construction of his collages, which uses such materials as painted papers, photographic reproductions, snippets of photographs, scraps of fabric, elements from magazines, cut & torn paper, watermedia & acrylic paints. The different materials of everyday existence are edited, sliced and reassembled into amazingly new images on paper, board or canvas.

These constructed worlds pull the viewer into a new reality. In short, collage empowers McRay to push the boundaries that allow the real world to infiltrate a painting, dissolve the conventions that separate art & life, high art & popular culture.

“I see art as a journey, a march, an exploration. I don’t see it as a comfy Sunday afternoon endeavor”.
